About Death Race Tracking

Origins

Death Race Tracking began as a modest attempt to help my friend Emma manage her annual obsession with the Oscars. Emma’s passion for film was matched only by her resilience, which she chronicled in her cancer diary.

The project originally took the form of a Google Sheet I built to help her track nominees. Following Emma's death, I discovered the r/OscarsDeathRace subreddit and Discord community; finding a group of people who shared this specific, niche passion which changed the trajectory of the project entirely, and the spreadsheets became more complex, and I developed a public-facing standings website that was fed directly from those spreadsheets.

The 2023 Iteration

In 2023, the site moved away from spreadsheets and launched as a dedicated platform built on Bubble.io. The response was far greater than anticipated, and the site quickly became used by many in the community. However, that growth brought significant challenges.

The scaling costs of the original platform became unsustainable for a passion project. I am incredibly grateful to the community members who chipped in to cover those expenses, allowing the site to remain live for two full seasons. Their generosity proved that this tool was something the community valued.

The 2025 Rewrite

It became clear that to ensure the site's longevity, a complete overhaul was necessary. Throughout 2025, I have been working on a total rebuild of Death Race Tracking. This latest version features entirely new architecture and a more sophisticated approach to data importing and tracking.

The site is now designed to handle the nuances of the "Death Race" more efficiently—such as managing films with multiple nominations for performances or songs—while offering a smoother experience for power users.
