1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files a website saves on your device. We also use your browser's local storage, which works in a similar way. This policy covers both, and calls them "cookies" for short.
Cookies set by deathracetracking.com are first-party cookies. Cookies set by another company whose service we use, such as Stripe or Google, are third-party cookies.
2. How we use cookies
Some cookies are needed for the site to work. We set those without asking. Everything else is off until you turn it on in the cookie banner or in Cookie Settings.
3. The cookies we use
A. Necessary
These keep you signed in and keep the site secure. They can't be switched off.
- Sign-in session (connect.sid): keeps you signed in after you log in with Google or Discord. It lasts 7 days from your last visit, up to 30 days in total.
- Signed-in marker (drt_session): tells the page you are signed in so it loads the right view. It lasts 7 days.
- Security token (_csrf): protects forms and saved changes from forged requests. It is removed when you close your browser.
- Cookie choices (cookieConsent and cookieSettings, in local storage): remember what you chose so we don't ask again.
- Cloudflare (__cf_bm, up to 30 minutes, and cf_clearance if you pass a security check): Cloudflare protects the site from bots and attacks, and may set these to tell real visitors from automated traffic.
- Stripe (__stripe_mid, up to 1 year, and __stripe_sid, 30 minutes): set by our payment provider on the subscription page to prevent fraud. Stripe does not load on other pages.
Google and Discord set their own cookies on their own sites when you sign in with them. Their cookie policies cover those.
B. Analytics
We use Umami to see which pages are visited and where errors happen. Umami does not use cookies and does not identify you. We only load it if you turn Analytics on.
C. Marketing
Free accounts see adverts from Google AdSense. Subscribers don't. Google and its partners may set cookies to show and measure adverts, and to personalise them. We only load adverts if you turn Marketing on. You can find out more in Google's advertising policies.
D. Preferences
These remember how you like the site set up: light or dark theme, the year and decade you last viewed, your race and calendar views, and which sign-in button you used last. They are kept in local storage on your device and are not sent to us. If you turn Preferences off, we delete the saved choices.
4. Emails
Emails don't set cookies in your browser. Account emails, such as receipts and renewal reminders, contain no tracking. Our newsletter is sent through Kit, which may use a small tracking image and tracked links to tell us whether an email was opened or a link was clicked. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in any issue.
5. How to control cookies
- Cookie Settings: on your first visit a banner asks what you want to allow. You can change your mind at any time using the "Cookie Settings" link in the site footer.
- Your browser: most browsers let you block or delete cookies. If you block necessary cookies, you won't be able to sign in.
- Google adverts: you can manage advert personalisation in your Google account's ad settings.
6. Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the cookies we use change. The date at the top of the page shows the latest version.
